Falmouth
- The town of Falmouth consists of the following villages - Falmouth,
East Falmouth, North Falmouth, West Falmouth, Falmouth Heights,
Hatchville, Teaticket, Waquoit and Woods Hole.
- Falmouth is the second largest town on Cape Cod.
- The Wampanoag Indians were the first to make Falmouth home, although at that
time it was known as Succanesset.
- The first european to visit the town was Bartholomew Gosnold, who named it after
his home in Falmouth, England.
- First settled in 1660, Falmouth became home for many colonists seeking
religious freedom.
- In the heart of Falmouth lies its historic Village Green, a gathering place
for the town since its creation in 1749.
- Falmouth was attacked by the British in both the Revolutionary War
and the War of 1812.
- Like most Cape Cod towns, whaling in Falmouth was at its peak in the early to mid 1800's.
- Katherine Lee Bates, composer of "America the Beautiful", was born, raised and is buried in Falmouth.
- The Falmouth Congregational Church houses an original Paul Revere bell.
- Each August thousands of runners from all over the world gather for the
famous Falmouth Road Race.
- Outdoor band concerts are held Thursday evenings (July & August) at Marina Park adjacent to the
harbor. Free of charge. Lawn seating.
- Beautiful sunsets can often be seen over the waters of Buzzards Bay from several locations in West Falmouth.
- The village of Woods Hole is home to the Marine Biological Laboratory and the
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (most recently famous for discovering the Titanic), both internationally famous research facilities in
the ocean sciences. The Oceanographic's Exhibit Center is worth a trip.
- Woods Hole is also home of the National Marine Fisheries Aquarium, small but free to the
public with a great "hands on" area for the kids.
- Falmouth/Woods Hole are the primary source for ferry service to the Islands of
Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
